Professional Experience
Information Systems Technician
May 2022 - May 2025United States Navy - USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108)
- Provisioned and supported a 500-unit computer fleet across classified (Secret) and unclassified networks for 300+ users; tracked assets by MAC address, port location, device number, and serial number, resolving conflicts and managing resets through decommissioning.
- Owned the weekly backup schedule for every server on the ship - domain controllers, file and print servers, Exchange, SQL, and dedicated backup servers - so recovery after a failure was fast and routine rather than improvised. When servers failed or came back broken after a reset, backups meant no data loss.
- Reprovisioned devices and applied Group Policy fleet-wide through SCCM to bring every unclassified and Secret computer into DISA STIG compliance; actively searched out and patched SCCM vulnerabilities, adjusting them at the department and role level as they were found.
- Ran regular security audits of all accounts aboard, handled password resets, and managed creation of privileged and non-privileged accounts - matching Group Policy and permissions to department, rank, and role rather than a single blanket policy.
- Used SCCM to manage user accounts and systems, and administered Active Directory across multiple departments and security levels, holding 99.9% network availability.
- Worked day to day across Windows Server, Active Directory, and Linux/PowerShell for server reboots and patching.
- Ran and terminated network cabling by hand through combat systems and engineering spaces shipwide - Cisco switches and routers, fiber and RJ45 - and set up satellite-to-router IP connectivity.
- Reimaged computers from scratch and applied BitLocker encryption and McAfee endpoint protection as part of standard system builds.
- Led the ship-to-shore network migration during maintenance availabilities, coordinating across multiple departments and security levels to restore and validate full connectivity before turnover.
- Responded to power blackout and brownout events, getting onto the maintenance laptop immediately to run shutdown scripts before battery backup failed and hardware took the hit.
- Configured DFS and networked printers for domain- and group-wide use, set up video and teleconference equipment, and stood up Microsoft Teams quickly to support classified communications.
- Handled bulk hard drive removal and destruction, including degaussing, and decommissioned or replaced computer modules in line with security requirements.
- Traced hardware, software, and connectivity issues to root cause - starting with the basics, like ruling out user error - using cable testers and methodical troubleshooting, and prioritizing by system affected, who was impacted, how many, and expected downtime.
- Served as first point of contact for 300+ end users across multiple locations, departments, and security levels by phone, email, and in person; logged every fix and followed up to confirm it held.
- Conducted DISA STIG compliance reviews and closed out vulnerabilities flagged by ACAS/Nessus across Windows and RHEL.
- Wrote and maintained the SOPs and documentation other technicians used, and trained junior sailors hands-on in cabling technique, systems administration, and standard procedure until they could troubleshoot independently.
